Join us in launching the Discovery Center at Water's Edge

Introduction

The people of Harford and Cecil Counties have been developing world-changing technology for over 100 years. Anchored by Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Northeastern Maryland has been home to inventions that have revolutionized our society — computing, the Internet, artificial respiration, high-speed photography, and so much more. Many of the technological advances first developed at APG for military application have found their way into the everyday lives of our citizens.

The vision for the Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is to be a place where learners of all ages explore, experience, invent, create, and play with technology, leading them to a greater understanding of the scientific principles at play and the history of that technology’s development. This Discovery Center will feature displays and demonstrations that engage and excite our community about STEM, especially our youth.

The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge will tell the stories of the region’s rich technology heritage and contribution to society. We want to create an interactive space where we can light a fire of discovery in students of all ages and from all backgrounds.

At the Discovery Center visitors will have access to:

Historically accurate labs to follow the timelines of inventors such as Herman Heine Goldstine, creator of the first computer, the ENIAC.
Interactive labs to learn about the invention of the gas-mask and experience the testing process through virtual reality.
Game-like exhibits that demonstrate things like computer programming and how dogs are trained to sniff explosives.  Each area includes APG specific stories to enhance the connection with past and present STEM initiatives.
Laboratory classrooms where teachers will supervise the learning of biological, chemical, and physical sciences.
Large multi-purpose rooms that can be used by non-profit groups for field trips, APG leaders to host dignitaries, professional associations to hold TED talks, and family workshops on specific topics.
The Discovery Center will be a community asset designed to inspire education and innovation in STEM for learners of all ages.
